A New Lease on Life: Dr. C’s 1974 Jaguar E-Type V12 Roadster

Some cars are just transportation. Others carry a marriage inside them.

Dr. C’s 1974 Jaguar E-Type (XKE) V12 Roadster is the second kind. Long before it was his, the car belonged to his wife’s parents — and it was in that E-Type that Dr. C dated the woman who would become his wife. On their first anniversary, her parents gave the couple the car outright. Dr. C and his wife have owned it, and loved it, ever since.

That kind of history is why, when the E-Type’s original V12 engine burned up after decades of faithful service, there was never any question of whether it was worth saving. The only question was how.

A V12 Problem Needs a V12 Solution

Rebuilding a Jaguar V12 is not a weekend job, and it’s not cheap or simple even for shops that specialize in it. As we started tearing the original flathead V12 down and sizing up the damage, we weighed a full rebuild against a replacement engine. In the middle of that process, a used Jaguar XJS HE (High Efficiency) V12 became available, and we made the call to use it in place of the original motor.

It turned out to be the wrong call — not because the idea was bad, but because the used engine itself was not suitable. Once we got into it, the “good used motor” we’d sourced simply wasn’t usable as-is. So the plan changed again: instead of dropping in a running used engine, we rebuilt the XJS HE motor, top to bottom — heads rebuilt, lower end gone through completely with new rings and bearings, and everything else it took to make the engine right.

Rust Changes the Plan

While that engine work was underway, we found something that stopped the project cold: rust in the rear of the car, in the sheet metal supporting the tub and body structure. Finishing a fresh V12 engine and dropping it into a car with compromised structure underneath it would have been a disservice to Dr. C and to the car, so we said as much. The car sat for a while as the decision got made.

Dr. C eventually found a body shop in Houston willing to take the car apart, replace the rusted sheet metal in the rear structure, and put it back together. The metalwork itself came out okay. Everything else did not. The shop left the wiring in pieces — taped over, disconnected, not reassembled the way it needed to be — and the car came back to us in worse overall mechanical condition than when it left.

Putting It Back Together the Right Way

From there, the job became a full, proper reassembly. We finished the HE motor. We rewired everything that had been torn out and needed replacing. We went through the brakes and the cooling system. We fitted a new exhaust system. And instead of putting the original four Zenith-Stromberg carburetors back on, we sourced a set of SU carburetors from the UK and built the intake around those instead.

The difference shows the moment you start it up. The car is smooth, strong, and runs cool — everything you’d want from a well-sorted Jaguar V12, and then some.

Three and a Half Years, and a New Lease on Life

All told, the project took three and a half years from the engine failure to handing the keys back to Dr. C. That’s a long time for a car to be apart, and a longer time for an owner to wait. But Dr. C has his E-Type back now, running better than it has in years.

There’s a coda to this story that makes it mean more than just a successful restoration. Dr. C recently went through a couple of serious health scares — and came out the other side of both of them. Between that and getting his car back on the road, he’s said that he feels like both he and the car have a new lease on life. That’s a remarkable way to look at it, and we’re proud to have played a part in it.
